The Legends of the Jews, Volume I

Gad

Family: Jacob's family · Role: son · First appears: The Birth Of Jacob's Children

Zilpah bore Jacob a son, and Leah named him Gad, meaning “fortune.” In the war with the Ninevites, Gad and Issachar attacked together, killing many warriors and driving others into a cave. When the Ninevites attacked them, Dan and Naphtali came to their aid; on the third day, Gad and his brothers joined Jacob in routing the enemy host.

Later, at Mount Seir, Gad was among Jacob’s sons who defeated Esau’s army and besieged the fugitives. Esau’s sons and the others then submitted to peace, and Jacob’s sons exacted tribute from them.
