The Legends of the Jews, Volume I

Leah

Role: Adinah's daughter · First appears: Woman

After six years, Adinah and Laban had twin daughters, Leah and Rachel. Laban had agreed that his elder daughter would marry Rebekah’s elder son. On the wedding day, he deceived Jacob by giving him Leah instead of Rachel; during the night, Leah answered when Jacob called for Rachel, and he reproached her when he discovered the deception by morning.

Seven months after the marriage, Leah gave birth to Reuben, followed by Simon, Levi, and Judah. She later gave Jacob her handmaid Zilpah as a wife, and bore Issachar and Zebulon, as well as an unnamed daughter. When Jacob planned to return home, Leah and Rachel approved. After Leah’s death, Reuben moved her couch into Jacob’s tent; Jacob and Leah’s sons mourned her.
