Simon
Also known as: Shime'on · Family: Jacob's family · Role: son · First appears: The Birth Of Jacob's Children
Leah bore Jacob’s second son, Shime’on, and named him “Yonder is sin.” During the outrage at Shechem, Simon and Levi deceitfully agreed to Hamor and Shechem’s marriage request while asking that Dinah be left alone until they consulted Isaac. They swore that no one in the city would remain alive by the next day, then killed its males and took its women, children, and livestock to Jacob. Among the captives, Simon took Bunah as his wife.
Later, during Esau’s campaign against Jacob, Simon joined his brothers in defeating Esau’s army and besieging the fugitives on Mount Seir. The sons of Esau and the other fugitives eventually submitted to peace and paid tribute. In a later confrontation, Judah defended Simon and Levi’s killing of Shechem’s inhabitants, saying the city had failed to intervene after Shechem dishonored their sister.
