The Hawaiian Romance of Laieikawai

Laielohelohe

Family: Kahauokapaka's family · Role: Laieikawai's twin sister · First appears: Chapter I · Part 2

In Chapter I, Laielohelohe was born as the second of the twin daughters of Malaekahana and Kahauokapaka, while her sister Laieikawai was given to Waka. Kapukaihaoa took her to Kukaniloko, and in Chapter XXII brought her out of hiding and gave her into Waka’s care. She went with Waka to Paliuli, where she stayed until Halaaniani took her.

In Chapters XXIII and XXIV, Laielohelohe was betrothed to and then married Kekalukaluokewa. At the wedding, Waka’s plan brought Laielohelohe and Halaaniani together on the birds; Waka then sent Laielohelohe and Kekalukaluokewa onto them, and they were hailed as married. They went to Paliuli and later returned to Kauai. In Chapter XXX, after Laieikawai asked that Laielohelohe and her husband be spared, they became rulers, with Kekalukaluokewa serving as chief counsellor under Laielohelohe.

About the sixth year of Laieikawai’s life with Kaonohiokala, he sinned with Laielohelohe; in Chapter XXXII, while Kekalukaluokewa was away touring the islands, Kaonohiokala made her his substitute and then took her as his lover. That evening she sailed to Oahu to seek her husband. At Honokalani, she found Kekalukaluokewa with Hinaikamalama; after they reconciled, she later learned of his secret meetings with Hinaikamalama. When Kekalukaluokewa twice delayed their departure, Laielohelohe returned to Kauai without him. Kaonohiokala met her there, and after four months of meetings, Laieikawai told him, “Get your wife and bring her up here and let us live together.” In Chapter XXXIV, Kaonohiokala again sinned with Laielohelohe.
