Halaaniani
Family: Puna · Role: youth · First appears: Chapter XX
In Chapter XX, Halaaniani, Malio’s brother and a youth of Puna, repeatedly saw Laieikawai at Keaau and became intent on winning her, though he was ashamed to approach her. During her four days of retirement, he sought Malio’s help before her planned marriage to Kekalukaluokewa. Malio encouraged him and devised a way to take Laieikawai while they were surfing; in Chapter XXI, Halaaniani seized her from the wave, leaving Kekalukaluokewa to ride ashore alone.
In Chapter XXII, Halaaniani took Laieikawai to wife. When Waka discovered the marriage, she renounced her granddaughter. Halaaniani and Laieikawai lived as man and wife, but he later left her at Keaau, where she waited and thought he was dead. In Chapter XXIII, Halaaniani and Malio tried to win Laielohelohe, but she refused them. At the wedding celebration in Chapter XXIV, Laieikawai saw that Halaaniani was alive; afterward, he became a vagabond.
