The Hawaiian Romance of Laieikawai

Hinaikamalama

Role: princess · First appears: Chapter IV · Part 2

At Maui in Chapter IV, Hinaikamalama conceived a passion for Aiwohikupua. After she beat him at konane, he agreed under their wager that he belonged to her, but said their bond must wait until he had completed his journey around Hawaii. In Chapter VIII, he reaffirmed that their vow still held, and her faith in him returned. In Chapter XVII, Snipe and Turnstone mistakenly brought her the message meant for Poliahu, telling her to prepare for marriage to the chief of Kauai.

In Chapter XVIII, the birds told Hinaikamalama that Aiwohikupua had joined with Poliahu. She asked her parents to let her visit Kauai, where she explained the wager and said she had come because she heard he was married to Poliahu and wanted to see how he had lied to her. Hauailiki conceived a passion for her, while Poliahu left for White Mountain in anger. That night Aiwohikupua took Hinaikamalama to fulfill their vow, and Poliahu spread her snow mantle over her. In Chapter XIX, Hinaikamalama refused to kiss Aiwohikupua—“I will not give you a kiss”—and left him; she also told Hauailiki to wait until he was ready to take her as his wife.

By Chapter XXVI, Aiwohikupua was summoning Kauai’s virgins to choose wives in place of Poliahu and Hinaikamalama. In Chapter XXXIII, Hinaikamalama became Kekalukaluokewa’s wife, though he told her that Laielohelohe was his wedded wife. Hinaikamalama returned to Haneoo to live; that same night Kekalukaluokewa began visiting her secretly, and they continued together for ten days without Laielohelohe knowing. Then Laielohelohe learned of the visits from Hinaikamalama’s guard.
