Waka
Family: Kahauokapaka's family · Role: grandmother of Laieikawai · First appears: Chapter I · Part 2
In Chapter I, Waka hid Laieikawai at Waiapuka and kept her there until she matured. In Chapter II, after a vision directed them to make their home in Paliuli, Waka and her grandchild set out for Hawaii. Waka wanted to keep Laieikawai concealed on the journey, but Laieikawai uncovered her face despite that wish.
By Chapter XV, Waka had foreseen Aiwohikupua’s arrival at Keaau; in Chapter XVI, she warned Kahalaomapuana that he planned to send men against her. In Chapter XX, Waka foresaw Kekalukaluokewa’s arrival and told Laieikawai he had come to take her as his wife. But after Laieikawai married Halaaniani, Waka renounced her and withdrew her supernatural protection. She later went to Oahu to bring Laielohelohe, another of her grandchildren, to Paliuli, and in Chapter XXIV arranged for Kekalukaluokewa and Laielohelohe to appear together at their wedding celebration. Waka was made the third heir to the chief’s seat; in Chapter XXX, Kaonohiokala meted out death to her.
