The Hawaiian Romance of Laieikawai

Kaonohiokala

Also known as: Lapu / The Eye of the Sun / the Eyeball-of-the-Sun · Family: Moanalihaikawaokele's family · Role: great high chief of Kahakaekaea and Nuumealani · First appears: Chapter XXV

In Chapter XXV, Kahalaomapuana went to fetch her brother Kaonohiokala as a husband for Laieikawai, and in Chapter XXVIII he reunited with his sister and asked their mother, Laukieleula, for permission to marry. When Kahalaomapuana returned and told Laieikawai of the journey, Laieikawai acknowledged him as her husband. In Chapter XXX, he appeared within the sun, recognized Laieikawai by the rainbow garment, and carried her away to dwell with him first in the moon and then in his home among the clouds. After punishing Waka with death and depriving Aiwohikupua of his wealth, he placed Kahalaomapuana as ruler and stationed his other sisters over separate islands.

After returning with Laieikawai to Kahakaekaea in Chapter XXXI, about the sixth year of their life together, Kaonohiokala fell into sin with Laieikawai’s twin sister, Laielohelohe. He sent Kahalaomapuana away to Kealohilani and arranged for Kekalukaluokewa to take her place; later, he sent Kekalukaluokewa on a tour of the islands and put Laielohelohe in his place. In Chapter XXXII, he told Laielohelohe, “This is the third year that I have desired you,” and they took their pleasure together. He continued meeting her, and after Laieikawai told him to bring “your wife” to live with them, he went to fetch her.

In Chapter XXXIV, after another meeting between Kaonohiokala and Laielohelohe, Moanalihaikawaokele stripped him of his place in Kahakaekaea and condemned him to become a fearsome ghost: “your name is Lapu, Vanity”. On the way back from his punishment, Kahalaomapuana was found in Kealohilani and taken to fill his place.
