The Hawaiian Romance of Laieikawai

Kekalukaluokewa

Family: Kauai · Role: chief · First appears: Chapter XIX

In Chapter XIX, after Kauakahialii died, Kekalukaluokewa took the rule, with their wife as counsellor. Before his death, Kauakahialii had charged him to guard their wife. In Chapter XX, after Kailiokalauokekoa died, Kekalukaluokewa inherited the chief’s house and other things, divided the land and set up his court. He then prepared 4,000 canoes and sailed from Kauai to Hawaii seeking a wife. At Keaau, Laieikawai saw him surfing; she recognized him as the man her grandmother had chosen, said she was pleased with him and agreed to marry him with her counsellors’ consent.

In Chapter XXII, Waka asked him for a canoe and men to fetch her foster child Laielohelohe, and Kekalukaluokewa provided a double canoe, crew and equipment. By Chapter XXIII, Laielohelohe was betrothed to him; in Chapter XXIV they married, were sent by Waka onto the birds to the assembly’s acclaim, and went to the uplands of Paliuli before returning to Kauai. There, Kekalukaluokewa and Laielohelohe turned the rule over the land and its divisions to Kapukaihaoa. In Chapter XXIX, he followed the seer’s warning by setting flag signals around his palace and staying within the protected place.

In Chapter XXX, Kaonohiokala made Kekalukaluokewa chief counsellor under Laielohelohe. In Chapter XXXI, he put Kekalukaluokewa in Kahalaomapuana’s place and appointed the seer as chief counsellor; in Chapter XXXII, Kekalukaluokewa became head over the group and was sent to tour the islands, with Laielohelohe as his substitute. In Chapter XXXIII, Hinaikamalama was his wife. When Laielohelohe found him with her, he told Hinaikamalama, “she is my wedded wife,” and he and Laielohelohe reconciled. But he continued secretly visiting Hinaikamalama for ten days. In Chapter XXXIV, Laielohelohe found them together again; after he twice delayed their departure, she returned to Kauai, giving up her love for him. Kaonohiokala later told Laieikawai that Kekalukaluokewa had taken a stranger to wife.
