The Hawaiian Romance of Laieikawai

Laukieleula

Family: Moanalihaikawaokele's family · Role: mother of Kahalaomapuana · First appears: Chapter XXVII · Part 1

In Chapter XXVII, Laukieleula is named as the mother of Aiwohikupua and Kahalaomapuana, and as the sister of Mokukelekahiki and Kaeloikamalama. In Chapter XXVIII, Kahalaomapuana reveals herself to Laukieleula as “the last fruit of your womb.” Laukieleula embraces her and wails over her for guarding her polluted clothes, then agrees to help her bring her brother Kaonohiokala to Laieikawai.

At Awakea, Halulu carries Laukieleula and Kahalaomapuana to where Kaonohiokala lives. Laukieleula wakes him by holding one of the sun’s rays, then consents when he asks to go to Laieikawai as his wife. In Chapter XXX, Laukieleula is among those whose daughters and Laieikawai are taken to dwell in the moon; in Chapter XXXIV, she joins Moanalihaikawaokele and Laieikawai in seeing Kaonohiokala’s sin and deciding what to do about him.
