The Hawaiian Romance of Laieikawai

Turnstone

Role: swift messenger · First appears: Chapter XVI

In Chapter XVI, Aiwohikupua sent Turnstone and Snipe to find out what had happened to his men. As they fled Kihanuilulumoku in their bird bodies, they escaped the lizard’s closing jaws by flying quickly.

In Chapter XVII, the messengers went to Hana to announce Aiwohikupua’s marriage demands before Poliahu, but mistakenly delivered the message to Hinaikamalama instead. When Aiwohikupua learned of the error, Turnstone and Snipe fell out of his favor. In Chapter XVIII, they returned to Hinaikamalama to tell her of Aiwohikupua’s union with Poliahu.
