The New Testament

Simon the Canaanite

Family: Jesus's disciples · Role: apostle · First appears: Matthew 10

In Matthew 10, Jesus gives Simon the Canaanite and the twelve apostles power over unclean spirits and the ability to heal sickness and disease. He sends them to Israel to preach that the kingdom of heaven is near, heal the sick, cleanse lepers, raise the dead, and cast out devils, while commanding them not to go among the Gentiles or into Samaritan cities: “These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them.”

In Mark 3, Jesus ordains Simon among the twelve to remain with him and receive authority to preach, heal sicknesses, and cast out devils. Jesus is Simon’s mentor, for “The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord,” while God is identified as his parent.
