Andrew
Family: Jesus and his followers · Role: disciple · First appears: Matthew 4
At Matthew 4, Andrew was fishing with his brother, Peter, when Jesus called them to follow him and become fishers of men. Andrew left his nets, and at Matthew 10 he joined the twelve as Jesus gave them power to heal and cast out devils, then sent them to preach, heal, cleanse, raise the dead, and cast out devils. In this teaching, God was named as their Father.
At Mark 1 and Mark 3, Andrew continued with Jesus, among the twelve ordained to remain with him and receive authority to preach, heal, and cast out devils. In Mark 13, Jesus warned Andrew and Peter that they would face councils, beatings, and rulers, and commanded them to watch and pray because the appointed time was unknown. Luke 6 records Andrew being chosen among the twelve apostles.
In John 1, Andrew followed Jesus after hearing him identified as the Lamb of God, then brought Peter to him: “And he brought him to Jesus.” He later joined Peter as Jesus fed about five thousand people, and in John 12 he and Philip told Jesus about those seeking him. After Jesus appeared alive and instructed the apostles to await God’s promise at Jerusalem, Andrew remained among them, and in Acts 1 Matthias was chosen and numbered with the apostles.
