Bartholomew
Family: Jesus's disciples · Role: apostle · First appears: Matthew 10
Bartholomew was an apostle among Jesus’s disciples. In Matthew 10, Jesus gave the twelve power over unclean spirits and sickness, then sent them to Israel to preach, heal, cleanse, raise the dead, and cast out devils, commanding, “Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not.” Jesus was his commander and mentor, while God was described as his Father.
In Mark 3, Jesus ordained the twelve to remain with him and receive authority to preach, heal, and cast out devils. In Luke 6, Bartholomew was among the twelve whom Jesus chose and named apostles. In Acts 1, Jesus appeared alive to the apostles, spoke with them about the kingdom of God, and commanded them to remain in Jerusalem and await the Father’s promise; afterward, the lot fell upon Matthias, who was numbered with the eleven apostles.
