In Matthew 1–3 and Luke 1–3, Jesus is born to Mary the mother of Jesus through the Holy Ghost, is named by Joseph the husband of Mary, and is identified as descended from David and Abraham. After Joseph the husband of Mary takes him and Mary the mother of Jesus to Egypt and then settles them in Nazareth, Jesus is baptized by John the Baptist; the heavens open, the Spirit descends, and God declares him his beloved Son. In the wilderness, Satan tempts him, but Jesus rejects him and commands worship of God alone.
From Matthew 4 through Luke 21, Jesus preaches the kingdom of heaven, teaches through sermons and parables, and heals the sick, casts out devils, stills storms, feeds multitudes, and raises the dead. He calls Peter, Andrew, James, the son of Zebedee, John, the son of Zebedee, Matthew, and others to follow him, appoints and sends the twelve, and later sends seventy disciples. He teaches love of God and neighbor, forgiveness, prayer, humility, watchfulness, and care for the poor, while Peter recognizes him as the Christ. Jesus also foretells his suffering, death, and resurrection, and teaches that his followers will proclaim the gospel among all nations.
In Matthew 26 through John 21, Judas Iscariot betrays Jesus, Caiaphas and the council condemn him, and Pilate delivers him to crucifixion after the crowd chooses Barabbas. Jesus is crucified, dies, and is buried by Joseph of Arimathaea; on the first day of the week he rises, appears to Mary Magdalene, the disciples, and Thomas, and commissions his followers to preach and baptize. He later appears to Paul, commands him to bear witness, and is taken up into heaven after instructing the apostles to await the Father’s promise.
