Le Morte d'Arthur

Sir Persant

Also known as: Blue Knight / Persant / Persant of Inde / Sir Persant of Inde · Family: Inde · Role: lordly knight · First appears: Book VII, Chapter XI

As the Blue Knight, Sir Persant of Inde first met Beaumains as a rival in Book VII, Chapter XI, refusing to withdraw before testing his strength: “For sithen I am come so nigh this knight I will prove his might or I depart from him”. Beaumains defeated him, and Persant yielded after recognizing him as the victor over his brothers Sir Percard, Sir Pertolepe, and Sir Perimones. He granted Beaumains homage, fealty, and a hundred knights, then received him at his pavilion with food, wine, and rest; afterward, Persant conveyed Beaumains and Linet on their way.

At Carlion, Persant and his brothers yielded themselves and their knights to King Arthur and performed homage. He later joined Sir Ironside and his brethren in opposing Sir Launcelot, but Sir Launcelot unhorsed him. When Sir Gareth was revealed as Beaumains, Persant rode with Sir Tristram, Sir Ironside, and Gareth, and later brought a hundred knights to do homage and fealty to Gareth, asking to serve as his sewer-chief. King Arthur then made Persant and his two brothers Knights of the Round Table and gave them lands.

In Book XIX, Persant rode with Queen Guenever and Sir Kay, Sir Agravaine, Sir Brandiles, Sir Sagramore, Sir Dodinas, Sir Ozanna le Cure Hardy, Sir Ladinas of the Forest Savage, Sir Pelleas, and Sir Ironside during the Maying. When Sir Meliagrance attacked the queen and her knights, Persant fought beside Sir Brandiles, Sir Ironside, and Sir Pelleas; they were sore wounded before the knights were defeated, and the queen secured their lives by agreeing to accompany Meliagrance.
