Sir Sagramore
Also known as: Sagramore / Sagramore le Desirous / Sir Sagramore le Desirous · Family: Arthur's court · Role: knight · First appears: Book IV, Chapter XXV
Sir Sagramore, also called Sagramore le Desirous, serves as a knight of King Arthur’s court. In Book IV, he and Sir Osanna, Sir Dodinas, and Sir Felot of Listinoise were struck down and badly wounded by Sir Marhaus: “and there Sir Marhaus with one spear smote down these four knights, and hurt them sore”. In Book VI, he was among the knights who recognized Sir Launcelot as the disguised warrior who had defeated them.
In Book VII, Sir Epinogrus and Sagramore broke their spears against each other, while Sir Gareth later bore Sagramore down alongside Sir Dinadan, La Cote Male Taile, and Sir Dodinas, then struck down Sagramore and Sir Gawaine. In Book VIII, Sagramore marvelled when Sir Dodinas fell, but Sir Tristram defeated him and broke his thigh in the fall; Tristram also later identified Sagramore and Dodinas as the two knights who had fought him. Sagramore rode with Sir Gawaine, Sir Kay, and Sir Tristram in Book IX, joined Sir Palomides and Sir Gaheris during the tournament, and was again unhorsed by Tristram. In Book X, Sagramore and Dodinas sought revenge on Tristram, but spared him before his encounter with Palomides; later, Palomides defeated Sagramore, Sir Gawaine, Sir Uwaine, and Dodinas in successive jousts.
At the urging of King Arthur and Queen Guenever, Sagramore joined Sir Gawaine, Uwaine, Sir Aglovale, and Sir Percivale de Galis in searching England, Wales, and Scotland for Launcelot. In Book XVIII, he fought with Sir Brandiles, Dodinas, Sir Kay, Sir Griflet, Sir Mordred, Sir Meliot de Logris, Sir Ozanna le Cure Hardy, Sir Safere, Sir Epinogrus, and Sir Galleron against the forces of the King of Northumberland, but was later among the knights unhorsed by Launcelot and Sir Lavaine. In Book XIX, he rode with Guenever and other knights during their Maying, then was severely wounded when Sir Meliagrance’s forces attacked them; Guenever agreed to go with Meliagrance on the condition that he spare and protect her wounded knights.
