Le Morte d'Arthur

Sir Dodinas

Also known as: Dodinas / Dodinas le Savage / Sir Dodinas le Savage · Family: King Arthur's court · Role: knight · First appears: Book IV, Chapter XXV

Sir Dodinas, also known as Dodinas le Savage, was a knight of King Arthur’s court. In Book IV, Chapter XXV, Sir Marhaus struck him down and badly wounded him with one spear alongside Sir Sagramore, Sir Osanna, and Sir Felot of Listinoise. In Book VII, Sir Gareth likewise defeated him with one spear, bearing down Sir Dinadan, La Cote Male Taile, and Sir Sagramore with him.

During Book VIII, Sir Palamides put Sir Dodinas to the worse at the tournament, and later Sir Tristram unhorsed him so forcefully that he nearly broke his neck. Sir Dodinas and Sir Sagramore then sought revenge, but Sir Tristram defeated them again; within three days, they spared him before his combat with Sir Palomides. Sir Dodinas also rode with King Arthur and Sir Launcelot to seek Sir Tristram, and Sir Sagramore marvelled when he saw him suffer such a fall.

In Book XVIII, Sir Dodinas joined Sir Brandiles, Sir Sagramore, Sir Kay, Sir Griflet, Sir Mordred, Sir Meliot de Logris, Sir Ozanna le Cure Hardy, Sir Safere, Sir Epinogris, and Sir Galleron as knights of the Table Round who beat back the forces of the King of Northumberland and the King of Northgalis. Sir Launcelot later smote him down with one spear among the knights of King Arthur’s court. In Book XIX, Sir Dodinas rode with Queen Guenever, Sir Agravaine, Sir Ladinas of the Forest Savage, Sir Persant, Sir Ironside, and Sir Pelleas in the Maying, but Sir Meliagrance attacked the queen and her knights; Sir Dodinas was among those struck to the earth with grim wounds before the queen agreed to go with Sir Meliagrance on the condition that he protect her wounded knights.
