Le Morte d'Arthur

Sir Brandiles

Also known as: Brandiles · Family: Arthur's court · Role: knight · First appears: Book VII, Chapter XXVIII

In Book VII, Sir Brandiles encountered Sir Arnold and Sir Gauter as rivals while riding with his friend Sir Kay. In Book IX, he jousted with Sir Tristram and was knocked down with his horse; after Sir Tristram revealed himself, Sir Brandiles counted him among a fellowship “right glad of your company.”

By Book X, Sir Brandiles belonged to the fellowship that welcomed Sir Dinadan, alongside Sir Uwaine, Ozana le Cure Hardy, Uwaine les Aventurous, Sir Agravaine, and Sir Mordred. He rode with Sir Dagonet and Sir Griflet, and when Sir Palomides struck Sir Dagonet down, Sir Brandiles challenged him and was likewise unhorsed. He later returned to court with Sir Ganis and his fellows to report what had happened.

In Book XVIII, Sir Brandiles stood among the knights of the Table Round with Sir Sagramore, Sir Dodinas, Sir Kay, Sir Griflet, Sir Mordred, Sir Meliot de Logris, Sir Ozanna le Cure Hardy, Sir Safere, Sir Epinogris, and Sir Galleron, helping beat back the forces of King of Northumberland. Queen Guenever is listed as his patron, while Sir Launcelot is both his rival and another knight who defeated him in battle, striking him down with one spear. In Book XIX, Sir Brandiles rode with Queen Guenever and her knights, fought Sir Meliagrance’s forces, and was sore wounded before being taken with the others under the queen’s covenant; Sir Gingalin, Sir Florence, and Sir Lovel are connected to him through his sister. At Carlisle in Book XX, Sir Brandiles was among the knights slain when Sir Launcelot rescued Dame Guenever.
