Le Morte d'Arthur

Pertolepe

Also known as: Green Knight / Sir Pertolepe / the Green Knight · Family: castle · Role: knight · First appears: Book VII, Chapter XII

In Book VII, Chapter XII, Sir Persant identifies Beaumains as the knight who defeated Pertolepe, marking Beaumains as both his brother’s conqueror and a rival. At the next feast of Pentecost at Carlion, Pertolepe came with fifty knights and yielded himself and them to King Arthur, alongside his brothers Sir Perimones and Sir Persant; the three told Sir Gareth how Beaumains had overcome them.

In the following chapters, Pertolepe told King Arthur that Beaumains had slain their brother Sir Percard, as well as Sir Gherard le Breusse and Sir Arnold le Breusse. He later defeated Sir Lionel by unhorsing him, but in Book VII, Chapter XXXV, Pertolepe brought thirty knights to Sir Gareth, did homage and fealty, and asked to serve as his chamberlain; Sir Gareth accepted.
