Joseph of Arimathaea
Family: Christian · Role: honourable counsellor · First appears: Mark 15
When evening came on the day before the sabbath, Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor who waited for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’s body. After receiving permission, he bought fine linen, took the body down, wrapped it, and laid it in a rock-hewn sepulchre, rolling a stone across its door.
In John 19, Joseph is described as a disciple of Jesus, though secretly for fear of the Jews, and he again sought permission from Pilate to take away the body. At a new sepulchre, Joseph and Nicodemus wound Jesus’s body in linen clothes with spices according to Jewish burial custom.
