The New Testament

David

Family: Israel · Role: king · First appears: Matthew 1

David is king of Israel. In Matthew 1, Jesse is named as his parent, and David fathers Solomon. Jesus is identified as “the son of David, the son of Abraham.” In Matthew 12, David enters the house of God while hungry and eats the shewbread, and Jesus is identified as the son of David. In Matthew 22, Jesus challenges the claim that Christ is merely David’s son by noting that David calls him Lord.

David is connected with Holy Ghost, through whom he speaks of the Lord’s enemies being made a footstool. In Luke, Nathan is listed as the son of David, while Joseph the husband of Mary is described as belonging to David’s house and lineage and as going to the city of David, Bethlehem. In Acts 2, God’s oath to David concerns the raising of Christ from the fruit of his loins to sit on his throne, and David’s prophecy says that Christ’s soul would not be left in hell and his flesh would not see corruption. David is also associated with God’s words about the nations raging and with finding favour before God while desiring a tabernacle for the God of Jacob. In Revelation 22, Jesus declares, “I am the root and the offspring of David.”
