In Genesis 30, Bilhah bore Dan to Jacob, and Rachel named him Dan. Naphtali was born to the same household afterward. By Genesis 35, Dan was counted among Jacob’s sons and brothers to Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin, with Naphtali identified as his brother. In Genesis 46, Dan had a son, Hushim.
In Genesis 49, Jacob blessed Dan among his twelve sons and charged them to bury him with his fathers in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite. Exodus 1 lists Dan among the children of Jacob who came into Egypt, alongside Gad and Asher. In Numbers 26, Dan’s family was represented by his son Shuham. Before his death, Moses blessed the children of Israel, saying of Dan: “Dan is a lion’s whelp: he shall leap from Bashan.”
