Issachar
Family: Jacob household · Role: son · First appears: Genesis 30
In Genesis 30, Leah conceived and bore Jacob’s fifth son, naming him Issachar; he is linked to both Leah and Jacob as parents. By Genesis 35, Issachar was one of Jacob’s twelve sons, alongside Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Zebulun, Joseph, Benjamin, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
By Genesis 46, Issachar was the parent of Tola, Phuvah, Job, and Shimron. In Genesis 49, Jacob blessed his twelve sons, including Issachar, and charged them to bury him with his fathers; the blessing was given to each “according to his blessing.”
In Numbers 26, Issachar was associated as parent with Pua and Jashub. In Deuteronomy 33, Moses blessed Zebulun and Issachar in their journeys and dwellings, saying, “and Issachar, in thy tents.” Issachar is also linked to God in worship, as sacrifices of righteousness are offered and the people are called to the mountain.
