Gad
Family: Jacob household · Role: son · First appears: Genesis 30
In Genesis 30, Zilpah was given to Jacob and bore Gad, followed by Asher. By Genesis 35, Gad was counted among Jacob’s twelve sons, alongside Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, Benjamin, and Asher; in Exodus 1, he was listed with Dan and Naphtali among the children of Israel who came into Egypt.
In Genesis 46, Gad was named as the father of Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli. In Genesis 49, Jacob blessed Gad among his sons and charged them concerning his burial. Later, Gad’s descendants included the families of Zephon, Ozni, and Arod. Before his death, Moses blessed Israel, saying of Gad, “Blessed be he that enlargeth Gad: he dwelleth as a lion, and teareth the arm with the crown of the head.”
