Rachel
Family: Jacob household · Role: Laban's younger daughter · First appears: Genesis 29
Rachel is Laban’s younger daughter and Leah’s sister. In Genesis 29, she met her cousin Jacob at the well, and Jacob loved her, offering seven years of service for her: “And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.” After fulfilling Leah’s week, Jacob received Rachel as a wife, and Laban gave Bilhah to Rachel as her maid.
In Genesis 30, Rachel wrestled with Leah and named her son Naphtali, then said God had judged her and named another son Dan. Her womb later opened, and she bore Joseph to Jacob, saying that God had taken away her reproach and would add another son. In Genesis 31, Jacob sent for Rachel and Leah in the field, while Rachel stole Laban’s household images; afterward, Laban blessed his daughters and departed.
At Ephrath in Genesis 35, Rachel died after giving birth. As she was dying, she called the child Benoni, but his father called him Benjamin: “as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin”.
