Greek Mythology

Periboea

Family: Olenus · Role: wife of Oeneus · First appears: Apollodorus, Library 1.8

In Apollodorus, Library 1.8, Periboea is identified as the daughter of Hipponous, who was seduced by Hippostratus, son of Amarynceus. She became the wife of Oeneus, who “By her Oeneus begat Tydeus.”

In Library 3.5, Polybus, king of Corinth, found an infant and brought him to his wife Periboea; she adopted him, passed him off as her own, healed his ankles, and called him Oedipus. In Library 3.10, Periboea is described as a Naiad nymph who, with Icarius, had five sons—Thoas, Damasippus, Imeusimus, Aletes, and Perileos—and a daughter, Penelope, whom Ulysses married.

In Library 3.12, another Periboea is the daughter of Alcathus, son of Pelops; she married Telamon and was the mother of Ajax son of Telamon. In the Epitome 6, the lot first fell on Periboea and Cleopatra.
