Greek Mythology

Icarius

Family: Attica · Role: host of Dionysus · First appears: Apollodorus, Library 1.9

🌐 Also appears in: The Odyssey (as Icarius)

Icarius was named as a child of Perieres and Gorgophone. With Periboea, a Naiad nymph, he had five sons—Thoas, Damasippus, Imeusimus, Aletes, and Perileos—and a daughter, Penelope, whom Ulysses married after soliciting Icarius for her hand.

At Lacedaemon, Hippocoon expelled Icarius and Tyndareus, but after Heracles slew Hippocoon and his sons, they returned and Tyndareus succeeded to the kingdom. Later, Icarius received from Dionysus a vine branch and learned how to make wine. When he shared the drink with shepherds, they mistook it for a bewitchment and killed him; afterward, his daughter Erigone searched for him.
