Penelope

First appears: Apollodorus, Library 3.10

🌐 Also appears in: The Odyssey (as Penelope)

Penelope was the daughter of Icarius and Periboea, and Odysseus married her after seeking Icarius’s help in winning her hand. She became the mother of Telemachus and bore Poliporthes to Odysseus; another account says she bore Pan to Hermes.

When Odysseus was believed dead, Penelope was wooed by suitors: twelve from Ithaca, fifty-seven from Dulichium, twenty-three from Samethere, and forty-four from Zacynthos, including Antinous, Amphinomus, Ctesippus, Agelaus, Eurylochus, and many others. One account says she was seduced by Antinous and sent by Odysseus to Icarius, while another says she met her end at Odysseus’s hands because of Amphinomus, who was also alleged to have seduced her.

At the palace, Odysseus killed the suitors with the help of Eumaeus, Philoetius, and Telemachus, then “made himself known to his wife and his father.”
