Greek Mythology

Tydeus

Family: Calydon · Role: son of Oeneus · First appears: Apollodorus, Library 1.8

🌐 Also appears in: The Iliad (as Tydeus) · Greek Tragedy — The Same Myth, Three Voices (as Tydeus)

Tydeus was the son of Oeneus; Gorge and Periboea are each named as his mother, and Diomedes was his son. When he had grown to manhood, he was banished after killing Alcathous, according to one account, and he also murdered his brother Olenias.

Tydeus married Deipyle. Adrastus later promised to restore them to their native lands, and Tydeus marched against Thebes with him. He was sent to tell Eteocles that he must yield the kingdom to Polynices, and Amphiaraus hated him for persuading the Argives to join the expedition. Tydeus slew all but Maeon before returning to the camp, then was wounded in the belly by Melanippus; Athena brought medicine intended to make him immortal, but Tydeus died from the wound.
