The Story of the Volsungs

Helgi

Family: Volsungs · Role: son of Sigmund and Borghild · First appears: Chapter VIII · The Death of King Siggeir and of Signy · Part 2

In Chapter VIII, Sigmund and Borghild had two sons, Helgi and Hamund. When he was fifteen winters old, Helgi went to war with Sinfjotli, sharing command of the army with him. In Chapter IX, he defeated Hunding, slew his sons Alf, Eyolf, Herward and Hagbard, then pledged to fight Hodbrod before Sigrun could be given to him. At Wolfstone, Helgi slew Hodbrod; Sigrun praised his deed, and they shared the land.

Helgi wed Sigrun, took the realm and became a king of great honour and renown. The Second Lay of Helgi Hundings-bane tells that they had sons together, and that Dag killed Helgi with Odin’s spear; a barrow was raised above him. In the lay, Odin made Helgi lord of all things in Valhall, and Sigrun went into his mound. It also says that Helgi and Sigrun were born again as Helgi the Scathe of Hadding and Kara.
