The Story of the Volsungs

Sigrun

Role: daughter of King Hogni · First appears: Chapter IX · How Helgi, the son of Sigmund, won King Hodbrod and his Realm, and wedded Sigrun · Part 1

In Chapter IX, Hogni (father of Sigrun) promised Sigrun to Hodbrod, but she vowed she would not take him as her husband. She told Helgi she would rather stay with him than with any king, and Helgi pledged to fight Hodbrod before she was given to him. At Wolfstone, Helgi slew Hodbrod; Sigrun praised his deed and agreed they would share the land. Helgi then took the realm and wed Sigrun.

In the Second Lay of Helgi Hundings-bane, Helgi and Sigrun had sons together. After Dag told her that Helgi had been slain, she cursed him for breaking his oaths to Helgi, though Dag offered her half his land and other gifts to heal her sorrow. Sigrun went into Helgi’s mound and stayed with him; the lay says she died not long after from sorrow and trouble. It also tells that Helgi and Sigrun were said to be born again as Helgi the Scathe of Hadding and Kara.
