Zeus’s rule was seen early at Ida, where his thunderbolts stopped Ares at the brink of battle, and his threat made Eos resume her daily course. In Book II, Hephaestus brought him a golden cup, which Zeus gave to Dardanus; it passed through Trojan kings to Priam. He warned the gods that the coming battle would bring heavy losses and forbade them to intervene, and they accepted his command. He also sent Hermes to Aeolus to summon winds for Achilles’ funeral pyre, and gave courage to the Argive men to behold the gathered goddesses.
In Book VIII, after Ganymedes pleaded for Troy, Zeus veiled the city and its walls in mist. He answered Antenor’s prayer but did not turn Achilles’ son away from Troy, then dispersed the cloud Apollo had cast over the battlefield. In Book X he awakened courage in both armies; later, he swept away battle-dust and calmed deadly winds. At Dardania, his thunderbolt frightened Neoptolemus and Philoctetes into obeying Calchas’ counsel. He gave Athena permission to hurl a ruinous storm at the Argive fleet, and at Troy joined Poseidon and Apollo in destroying the Achaean walls with floods and a chasm.
