Ares
Also known as: Lord of War / War / War-god / the War-god / the strong War-god / the tireless War-god · Family: Gods · Role: god · First appears: Book I · Part 1
In Book I, Ares is named as the parent of Penthesileia and as a son of Zeus. At Ida, he abandoned his approach to battle when Zeus threatened him with thunderbolts. He is married to Aphrodite.
In Book III, Athena dashed Ares down on the plain of Troy. In Book VIII, he came down from heaven to aid the Trojans, who turned back to fight the Argives; later, when Athena was about to fight him at Olympus, Zeus’s thunder deterred them both. Ares withdrew from the war and went to Thrace, while Enyo, his sister, rejoiced in the fighting.
In Book XI, Ares aided Aeneas as he drove the Argives back from the wall. In Book XII, he charged Athena, and the Immortals fought until Themis warned them; they stopped and made peace. In Book XIII, Ares and Enyo were maddened amid the fighting at Troy. In Book XIV, Aphrodite was caught in the marriage-bed in the net of Hephaestus.
