Apollo
Also known as: Far-darter / Healer Apollo / Phoebus / Phoebus Apollo / son of Leto · Family: The Greeks · Role: god · First appears: Book III · Part 1
In Book III, Phoebus Apollo, who had once kept the kine of Laomedon, shot Achilles in the ankle, leaving him stricken with mortal sickness. He had also saved Hector from destruction, prompting Hera to upbraid him. In Book IV, he rescued Glaucus from the fire and carried him to Lycia-land.
At Troy in Book IX, Apollo rescued Deiphobus from Neoptolemus, setting him down among the fleeing Trojans. When he moved against Neoptolemus, Poseidon warned him not to kill Achilles’ son; Apollo then returned to heaven, while Poseidon went back to the sea. In Book X, men worshipped Scylaceus as a god at Apollo’s command.
In Book XI, Apollo came to Aeneas and Eurymachus in the guise of Polymestor and urged them to fight, giving them courage to drive the Greeks into flight. In Book XIV, he joined Zeus and Poseidon in destroying the Achaean walls with floods and a chasm.
