Gabriel
Family: heavenly · Role: angel · First appears: Luke 1
In Luke 1, Gabriel is sent by God to Zacharias with news that Elisabeth will bear a son, John, who will be filled with the Holy Ghost from birth: “Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.” When Zacharias disbelieves him, Gabriel declares that he will be unable to speak until the prophecy is fulfilled.
In the sixth month, at Nazareth, Gabriel is sent from God to Mary the mother of Jesus, greeting and blessing her before revealing that she will conceive Jesus through the Holy Ghost: “And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.” Mary the mother of Jesus accepts the announcement and submits to God’s word.
