The New Testament

Elisabeth

Family: Israel · Role: Zacharias's wife; mother of John · First appears: Luke 1

In Luke 1, Elisabeth is the wife of Zacharias and a descendant of Aaron. Gabriel announces to Zacharias that she will bear a son named John, who will be filled with the Holy Ghost from birth: “thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.” After those days, Elisabeth conceives and hides herself for five months.

Elisabeth is the cousin of Mary the mother of Jesus. When she hears Mary’s salutation, the babe leaps in her womb and Elisabeth is filled with the Holy Ghost, blessing Mary and the fruit of her womb. Elisabeth then gives birth to John; on the eighth day, Zacharias writes, “His name is John,” and immediately regains his speech.
