Zacharias
Family: Israel · Role: priest · First appears: Luke 1
In Luke 1, Zacharias is married to Elisabeth when Gabriel announces that she will bear a son named John: “Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.” Because he disbelieves, he is struck dumb until the prophecy is fulfilled.
On the eighth day, with Elisabeth, Zacharias writes, “His name is John,” and immediately regains his speech. He then praises God.
