Pausanias' Description of Greece

Cepheus

Family: Arcadians · Role: son of Aleus · First appears: Book 8 · Chapter 4

Cepheus was the son of Aleus and brother of Lycurgus, Amphidamas, and Auge. His descendants included Aeropus, father of Echemus, and his daughters were Antinoe and Aerope.

At Caphyæ, the town was named after Cepheus. When refugees expelled from Athens by Ægeus fled to Arcadia, they asked Cepheus for permission to settle there. At Tegea, Athene granted him protection so the city would never be captured, giving him one of Medusa’s locks as protection for it.
