Pausanias' Description of Greece

Echemus

Family: Arcadians · Role: son of Aeropus · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 41

Echemus, son of Aeropus, slew Hyllus in single combat at Megara in Book 1, Chapter 41; Hyllus was buried there. The account in Book 8 places their fight near the Isthmus of Corinth, during the Dorians’ return to the Peloponnese, and says Echemus beat him after being challenged.

After killing Hyllus, Echemus married Timandra, daughter of Tyndareus. Following Lycurgus’s death, he became king of the Arcadians; Agapenor later succeeded him and led the Arcadians to Troy. Ladocea was named from Ladocus, Echemus’s son.
