Pausanias' Description of Greece

Auge

Family: Arcadians · Role: daughter of Aleus · First appears: Book 8 · Chapter 4

Auge was the daughter of Aleus and sister to Lycurgus, Amphidamas and Cepheus. In the account attributed to Hecatæus, Hercules had an intrigue with her at Tegea; when her pregnancy was discovered, Aleus put her and the child in a chest and sent it adrift at sea. Another account says that Hercules violated her near a spring north of Athene’s temple.

At the sea, Aleus ordered Nauplius to drown Auge. She secretly gave birth to Telephus on Mount Parthenium, where he was exposed and suckled by a doe. Auge later came to Teuthras in Mysia, where he fell in love with her and married her; she bore a son described as “most like” Hercules.
