Pausanias' Description of Greece

Aleus

Family: Arcadians · Role: son of Aphidas and king · First appears: Book 5 · Chapter 5

Aleus, son of Aphidas, became king after Æpytus. According to tradition, he founded Alea; he had three sons, Lycurgus, Amphidamas and Cepheus, and a daughter, Auge. The town of Caphyæ was named after Cepheus.

At Tegea, when Auge’s pregnancy by Hercules was discovered, Aleus put her and the child in a chest and let it drift out to sea. Another account says he ordered Nauplius to take Auge and drown her. After Aleus’s death, his eldest son Lycurgus succeeded him as king.
