The Hawaiian Romance of Laieikawai

Mailekaluhea

Family: Moanalihaikawaokele's family · Role: sister of Aiwohikupua · First appears: Chapter VIII

In Chapter VIII, Mailekaluhea left Kauai with her brother Aiwohikupua and her sisters Mailehaiwale, Mailelaulii, Mailepakaha, and Kahalaomapuana to seek Laieikawai. In Chapter IX, she went to Laieikawai on her brother’s behalf, but Laieikawai refused to marry him. When Aiwohikupua told his sisters to remain in the forest, they agreed to follow him; he sailed away without them, and they were left behind.

In Chapter XI, after Kahalaomapuana reappeared and ended their sorrow, Mailekaluhea and her sisters returned with her to Paliuli and lived near Laieikawai’s house. In Chapter XIV, Mailekaluhea was one of Laieikawai’s guardians and allowed Hauailiki and his companion to pass. In Chapter XXVIII, Kahalaomapuana recounted that Mailekaluhea had gone with her other sisters to woo Laieikawai for Aiwohikupua, but had been refused. By Chapter XXXI, Mailekaluhea had been made governor on Oahu.
