Mailehaiwale
Family: Moanalihaikawaokele's family · Role: sister of Aiwohikupua · First appears: Chapter VIII
In Chapter VIII, Mailehaiwale left Kauai with her brother Aiwohikupua and their sisters to seek Laieikawai. After Aiwohikupua told the sisters to remain in the forest, they agreed to follow him, but he sailed on without them. They later returned to Paliuli with Kahalaomapuana and lived near Laieikawai’s house, inside hollow trees.
In Chapter XIV, Mailehaiwale allowed Hauailiki and his companion to pass toward Laieikawai’s house. The next chapter, she met Aiwohikupua and his counsellor and warned them, “Back, you two, this place is taboo.” She also sent a guardian bird to Kahalaomapuana. In Chapter XX, Laieikawai called Mailehaiwale and the others her comrades and asked their counsel about her proposed marriage. Later, Kahalaomapuana recounted that Mailehaiwale had gone to woo Laieikawai for Aiwohikupua, but Laieikawai refused her. In Chapter XXXI, Mailehaiwale was made governor on Kauai.
