Xenophon's Hellenica

Gorgopas

Family: Lacedaemonians · Role: vice-admiral and governor of Aegina · First appears: Book 5, section 1, part 1/3

Hierax left twelve ships at Aegina under Gorgopas, installing him as the island’s governor. His blockade led Athens to recall its garrison after four months there. Antalcidas later collected Gorgopas’s ships, then sent him back to Aegina with all twelve while appointing Nicolochus to command the rest of the fleet.

Returning from Ephesus, Gorgopas encountered Eunomus and avoided an immediate battle by taking shelter at Aegina. At Cape Zoster, he ambushed Eunomus’s squadron, captured four triremes and towed them back toward the island. At break of day, Chabrias’s ambush defeated Gorgopas’s relief force, killing Gorgopas and the accompanying Lacedaemonians.
