Antalcidas
Family: Lacedaemonians · Role: envoy · First appears: Book 4, section 8, part 2/4
In 392 BC, Antalcidas was sent to Tiribazus to pursue a peace between Lacedaemon and the king, but the negotiations failed and the representatives went home. In 388–387 BC, he returned from the Persian court with Tiribazus after securing the Persian king’s alliance and military support.
As admiral, he collected Gorgopas’s ships at Aegina, sent him back with twelve vessels, and left Nicolochus in command of the rest. Later, Antalcidas secretly sailed from Abydos to Percote, then returned to Abydos after the Athenian commanders Demaenetus, Dionysius (Athenian commander), Leontichus, and Phanias pursued him toward Proconnesus. He awaited Polyxenus’s twenty ships, captured all eight ships of Thrasybulus of Collytus, and was joined by Syracusan, Ionian, and Ariobarzanes’s forces, bringing his fleet to more than eighty vessels.
