Chabrias

Family: Athenians · Role: admiral · First appears: Book 5, section 1, part 1/3

At Aegina, Chabrias’s ambush defeated Gorgopas’s relief force, killing Gorgopas and the Lacedaemonians with him. The battle also killed 150 Aeginetans and 200 foreign auxiliaries, metics, and sailors; Demaenetus commanded the Athenian hoplites who appeared at daybreak.

In B.C. 376, Chabrias led the Athenians to victory in a sea-fight against Pollis. Later, Iphicrates associated him and Callistratus with himself as colleagues, recognizing Chabrias’s high military reputation.
