The Five Books of Moses

Cain

Role: son of Adam and Eve · First appears: Genesis 4

In Genesis 4, Adam and Eve became Cain’s parents; Eve gave birth to him, saying, “I have gotten a man from the LORD.” Cain had a brother, Abel, and brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to God, but God rejected Cain’s offering while accepting Abel’s.

Cain spoke with Abel, then, when they were in the field, rose against him and killed him: “Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.” God cursed Cain so that the ground would not yield its strength, making him a fugitive and vagabond, but also marked him to prevent others from killing him. Cain went out from God’s presence and settled in the land of Nod, and he became the parent of Enoch.
