Styx
First appears: Apollodorus, Library 1.2
Styx was one of the Oceanids born to Ocean and Tethys, alongside Asia, Electra, Doris, Eurynome, Amphitrite, and Metis: “to Ocean and Tethys were born Oceanids, to wit, Asia , Styx, Electra, Doris, Eurynome, Amphitrite, and Metis;” She was joined to Pallas and became the mother of Zelus, Cratos, and Bia; Apollodorus also names Nike, Dominion, and Violence among her children. Apollodorus further says that by Zeus she had Persephone.
During the war against the Titans, Styx and her children fought on the side of Zeus. She then came to Olympus with them, and Zeus honored her, keeping her children with him always: “So deathless Styx came first to Olympus with her children through the wit of her dear father.” He appointed her the great oath of the gods, and her water became their eternal oath, with severe penalties for those who violated it.
