Chalcideus
Family: Lacedaemonians · Role: commander · First appears: Book 8 · Chapter 24 · Part 2
After an earthquake, Chalcideus replaced Melanchridas as commander of the expedition. At Corinth, the allies assigned him to lead the voyage to Chios while he equipped five ships in Laconia; after Alcibiades persuaded Endius and the other ephors to continue the expedition, Chalcideus sailed with him. At Chios, speeches by Chalcideus and Alcibiades preceded the city’s revolt from Athens, followed by revolts at Erythrae and Clazomenae.
At Miletus, Chalcideus and Alcibiades brought about the city’s revolt from Athens. Immediately afterward, Chalcideus and Tissaphernes concluded the first alliance between the King and the Lacedaemonians. Meanwhile, Chalcideus and Alcibiades chased Strombichides into Samos and left Peloponnesian crews at Chios; the Chians later caused Lebedos and then Erae to revolt.
